After the Open Door Policy, the market economy became an inevitable trend in China with the result that both national and international business environments became subject to change and uncertainty. The traditional 'Iron Rice Bowl' with high job security, which necessarily implies low numerical flexibility, was considered an intolerable barrier to the expansion of a market economy. Consequently, in Chinese SOEs, permanent jobs began to be replaced by labour flexibility. This has a significant influence on young generations of Chinese workers because the era of lifetime employment has gone. The seminar will involve a discussion on the subject of precarious employment on the basis of age as young workers in China nowadays face particular difficulties, not only under the effects of the current global economic environment but under a traditional ideology that deems them more suitable for precarious work.
