The ‘New business logic for SMEs: Accounting and financing implications’ conference, which took place in Brussels on Thursday 21 April, was hosted by MEPs Eva Kaili and Theodor Stolojan of the Economic and Monetary Policy Committee, and Günther Oettinger, the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society.

Professor Haslam’s work is concerned with how SMEs might construct innovative integrated financial viability statements to not only inform investors but also European industrial and digital policy towards SMEs.

Professor Haslam said: 'This was an important conference held at the European Parliament that considered the impact of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for SMEs and how new innovative digital financial disclosure templates could inform a broader group of stakeholders about the viability of SMEs. It is important to understand how SME business models are changing not only to inform investors such as banks, venture capitalists and crowd-funders about investment opportunities and risks but also generate intelligence useful for constructing European Union industrial policy to support SMEs.'
